The Bevco Cooling Tunnel: A Cool Solution for a Hot-Filled Product

Producers of food and beverage products fill containers with hot product to kill bacteria, increase the shelf life of the product, and decrease the viscosity of the product, making the filling process more efficient.

Cooling the containers after hot filling is essential to preserve the taste and nutritional value of the product. It also helps with the labelling and handling of bottles down the production line. When a glass or plastic bottle is hot, the sticky adhesive used for labelling is inhibited from setting, causing labels to move or fall off. Cooling will allow the adhesive to stick and makes handling the bottles safer as workers will not be exposed to the high temperature products.

The Bevco Cooling Tunnel provides a solution for cooling hot-filled products. The hot product is run through a stainless steel tunnel which is fitted with a series of nozzles that spray cool water onto the product. A blower and exhaust fan are located at opposite ends of the cooling tunnel to force a large volume of external air through the machine, enhancing the effect of evaporative-cooling. Each section of the Cooling Tunnel has hinged stainless steel doors through which operation can be observed and product removed.

The primary cooling source used is water, which is recirculated within each zone of the Cooling Tunnel. New water is only added to the system when the reservoir water exceeds the preset temperature. Evaporative cooling is provided through exhaust fans to cool the recirculating water and product.

The Bevco Cooling Tunnel is built using modular components which allows for ease of shipping and installation, adding or removing length for future production requirements, and divides the cooler into separate zones. The various zones can be designed to cool only or to hold the product at a high temperature for a designated period of time to ensure pasteurization before cooling. A zone of moderate temperature water can be implemented at the infeed end to prevent thermal shock and cracking in glass containers.
